When I was 10 years old, I wanted to build a small wooden chair that we could put in the kitchen. My grandfather has a small garage workshop in which he taught me how to do this. He guided my hand through the process, teaching me about structural design and the practical methods for building furniture. He taught me the skills I would need in order to successfully do projects like this in the future. He showed me that woodworking projects like these provide a sense of accomplishment that cannot be found anywhere else because of how creating something tangible and useful can make you feel. I learned that I could find pleasure in working productively by creating things with my hands. What he showed me made me realize what I want to do in life; designing and building things that can be used, just like that chair.

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Noah. Great story. This sounds like slow work that involves concentration. What about it held your attention? It would be great if you opened with something descriptive, like what that workshop was like through a 10 year olds eyes.
